Those days where you wake up and think to yourself - "Today... I'd really love to get out and enjoy some nature. I'd really love to get a bucket load of rain unleashed over me. And I'd like it unleashed on me while I'm making some sweet, sweet photos. Oh and while I'm doing that, I'd really love a bazillion very, very hungry mosquitoes to engulf me like an angry swarm of ravenous blood-sucking beasts". Well, those days you need to get yourself to the West Coast of New Zealand. It ticks the boxes perfectly :)
This is the Thunder Creek Falls - one of the more well-known waterfalls along the Haast Highway connecting Wanaka to the West Coast. Easily-accessible (which, considering the conditions, was a blessing) and always impressive, we decided it was worth the stop.
The rain, relentless. The mozzies, unforgiving. But I stuck it like a fool with my half-broken umbrella, fumbling constantly in between wiping waterfall spray off my lens, swatting at insistent blood-suckers and panning my tripod to attempt this stitched & bracketed panorama. You'd think with all that I'd just shoot some single-frame shots but nooo... I'm a sucker for punishment and think that it's worth all the effort to strive for huge-resolution panoramas that can be printed HUGE. Yup, that's what I'll keep telling myself next time I'm stitching panoramas with moving water :)
Cheers, Bernie
